14. World's a Bug I Debug

It’s Wednesday already and I missed writing an entry last weekend. So here it goes.

What have I been up-to last week?

The week in general was all about work. I was concentrating a lot on fixing a bug that I discovered in the test system. I was investigating the issue in depth and realized the importance of some of the root cause analysis tools that I’ve heard of.

When we investige an issue, we always come up with many possible causes. Now we need to test each of these possibilities to isolate the bug. However, sometimes if we don’t document the findings we end up going in circles. During the last couple of weeks, I’ve realized how important documentation is. That is, even when you are investigating an issue, it’s good to document the findings so that you can have a moment and take a holisitic view of all the observations.

Apart from work, I really didn’t have time to work on a new blog post. However, I have a couple of ideas and I will commit soon.

How is everything else?

Back home, politics gets worse by the day. Amidst all this corona chaos, the government has decided to ammend the constitution and increase executive powers of the president. It is really crazy. Now the president is more like a dictator who can do anything. If HE is good, then this can be the best thing that has ever happened to the country. However, if the history teaches us anything, we should not be that optimistic.

I feel that Sri Lanka, just like most of the other small or third-world countries, are trapped amidst the petty power struggle between USA and China. Due to the influence of global economic forces, Sri Lanka really has no say. Honestly, eventhough the president has an enourmous power in domestic matters, HE is simply negligible in the global stage. Therefore, none of the Sri Lankan political counterparts can really do anything.

Last week, one of the committee members of the Chinese Communist Party has visited Sri Lanka and the purpose of the visit is unclear. Soon after the Chinese visit, USA state secretary is gonna visit Sri Lanka. Again, the purpose of the visit is unclear. Empires always try to devour small and insignificant countries, and here what we see is the beginning of the next chapter of another significant historical turning point.

In the world down under, the corona numbers dwindle and the states are looking at the possibility of lifting border restrictions. Victoria has successfully controlled the second wave and now they have removed most of the restrictions around the freedom of movement. Eventhough I felt that the restrictions were harsh, looking back, it seems neccessary.

What am I reading?
